About the Author

Mendel Kleiner is Professor Emeritus at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, and head of the Chalmers Room Acoustics Group. Before his retirement, Dr. Kleiner taught room acoustics, audio, electroacoustics, and ultrasonics in the Chalmers Master Program on Sound and Vibration in the Division of Applied Acoustics. After retiring, he continues his research in acoustics, as well as teaching and consulting. He has authored or coauthored more than 55 publications and 110 papers, including two books. He has presented many keynote lectures, led courses at international conferences on acoustics and noise control, and organized an international conference on acoustics. His main research areas include electroacoustics and audio, computer simulation of room acoustics, electroacoustic room acoustics enhancement, room acoustics of auditoria and small rooms, sound and vibration measurement technology, product sound quality, psychoacoustics, and musical acoustics. He is a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, serves on the Audio Engineering Society’s Standards Committee on Acoustics, and was chair of its Technical Committee on Acoustics and Sound Reinforcement for 20 years.

Do their stories actually report history, or are they simply tales that use familiar mythic elements about heroic figures to turn David and Jesus into heroes for a new generation? Thompson, who challenged conventional understandings of the history of Israel in The Mythic Past, answers these and other questions in this provocative but often pedantic study. Drawing on the wealth of tales of kings and saviors in Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Babylonian, Greek and Roman literature, he demonstrates that the biblical stories of David's military successes and Jesus' moral teaching are simply fictions weaving these earlier traditions into new hero stories. In addition, he reveals that the story of Jesus' resurrection was fashioned almost exclusively from the story of the dying and rising god, Dionysus. For Thompson, Jesus and David emerge merely as characters in stories that reveal the value of the good king. Although Thompson provides a valuable service by situating the Jesus and David tales in the context of other ancient Near Eastern literature, his argument that the biblical writers used such literature to write their fictions of David and Jesus is neither new nor startling. In addition, the lack of a coherent structure and a definitive conclusion lessens the effectiveness of Thompson's book. (Apr. 12)

About the Author
Thomas L. Thompson is one of the leading biblical archaeologists in the world. He was awarded a National Endowment fellowship, has taught at Lawrence and Marquette Universities in Wisconsin, and currently teaches at the University of Copenhagen, which has one of the most prestigious Biblical Studies programs in the world. Mark E. Young is Professor at the University of Central Florida. He received his bachelor’s degree from Miami University, his master’s from Wright State University, and his doctorate from Ohio University. He has trained helpers for more than 25 years and worked as a therapist in community mental health, private practice, college counseling centers, and corrections for more than 15 years. Since 2003 he has been affiliated with the Marriage and Family Research Institute teaching relationship skills to low-income couples.
